Left: EM1 + 25mm f1.4 Pan-Leica (50mm) + FL-600R Flash | Right: 450D + 30mm f1.4 Sigma (48mm) + 580EXII Flash |
I decided to do a weigh in to see how big a difference the new setup is compared to the old one. I didn't have a digital weighing scale, so a kitchen scale would have to do.
|
450D with 30mm Sigma - 975 grams |
|
EM1 with 25mm Pan-Leica - 740 grams |
|
450D with Additional 580EXII w Batteries - 1,475 grams |
|
EM1 with Additional FL-600R Flash w Batteries - 1,090 grams
|
So with the body and lens alone, the EM1 is 235 grams lighter, and with the flash, it's 386 grams lighter than the 450D setup...heck, the EM1 with the flash setup is just 115 grams heavier than the 450D
without flash!
I think the biggest benefit is portability...the body, two lenses, and flash fit snuggly in a $2 Daiso Neoprene A4 bag that I can put into my Gym bag...I can't do that with the 450D's setup at all.
Though pricier, I'm really glad with regards to portability, imagine if I had gotten the 70D...oh dear.

yeah you were initially quite fixed about getting the 70D and were not convinced about the weight.
Yeah boy, the realisation came when I stopped to think why I wasn't so bothered about the weight initially, then it dawned on me that it was because I had the lightest DSLR setup among the three of us. You had a 60D which was heavy, Al had a 24-105 lens which was heavy.
Hence when you guys talked about weight I couldn't see it, then after that day I went to check the weight on the 70D online and it was the turning point...phew!
