Just realised that Whatsapp has shortcuts that lead directly to your desired chat group! It's still a two-step process since I put my direct contacts in a folder (1. tap folder 2. tap desired chat group, similar to 1. tap whatsapp icon 2. tap desired chat group).
It does make it a tad easier for initiating a conversation though.
