Solid File Explorer

One thing I appreciated about the Galaxy S was that it came with its own in built file explorer which allows you to view background folders and managed/move/copy/paste stuff around. I use "appreciate" rather than "like" cause I didn't think it was a good idea for day to day users to have such access cause accidentally deleting a wrong file can seriously cock your phone's OS.

That said, phones like HTC doesn't seem to have its own file explorer which is a good thing, and so does stock ICS which also doesn't come with such an app, meaning day to day users won't accidentally mess up their own internal system files.

The reason why I use a file explorer is cause it allows me to store certain important items in my phone at all times. Sure there's dropbox but in the event where there's no internet, having it located directly in the phone's a good thing, hence documents, apart from my passport photo, is a pdf copy of my resume (in word, pages, and pdf) and school transcripts which I carry around in my phone at all times.

Though I disagree with having a file explorer as a stock option in a phone, I do like the idea that third party file explorers are available off Google Play that allow more experienced users to access their phone content.

Since I got my Galaxy Nexus, I've been using OI File Manager cause it was the closest look to the file explorer on the original Galaxy S..it's ugly, but I always figured background apps should look ugly cause after all, they were supposed to be in the background right? The uglier the better, that way it'd deter inexperienced users from wanting to use it...lol

I recently came across a new file explorer app though, called "Solid Explorer" which does the same thing as OI, only with a much nicer layout!

For day to day stuff, especially with just images and videos, it's sufficient to access your files from the stock Gallery app (aka Camera Roll on iOS), but for other background tasks, it's nice to see that some developers are making an effort to put aesthetics into background file exploration than others. =)
