Products like a unibody design by Apple, or full glass+aluminum iPhone, use unconventional materials and/or techniques to better their products for the end user.
HTC is also one of my favorite companies when it comes to unconventional manufacturing to better a product. Most of the phones manufactured by them are well construction from the bottom up, with a lot of thought going into their manufacturing process. Like the Sensation XE which has a glass surface that is "sunk in" and curves up at the edges, which means if your phone hits face flat on a table, the glass is still away from the surface and protected.
Take the HTC One S, which uses micro arc oxidation, a treatment process to their metal surface to increase the strength of the phone while giving it a good matte finish. The strengthening process makes it 5 times tougher than aircraft aluminum, which means it has the potential to make phones even thinner and lighter in the years to come.
Next to Apple, HTC is probably the other company that knows a good design when they see one. Details such as the speaker grill which is machined into the shell instead of looking like a separate after-thought. Even the HTC Cha Cha, though a low end phone, does not feel low end in the hand, it definitely felt more premium than the Galaxy S right up to the point when you turn on the phone...lol.
