Interior Photography

Was requested by a friend to help take some photographs for his construction company of an office they had done recently around Novena area. Can't exactly say where, they were a tad sensitive about it.

I was a little reluctant at first cause I wasn't confident of the job, plus I wasn't sure how to charge him so I was going to turn it down, but cause he was pretty desperate, I agreed to it and rented a 7-14mm f4 Panasonic Lens.

I have to admit, I shot everything in 7mm, especially since most of the rooms were pretty tight. I don't think I managed to bring out the full potential of the rooms but some of the photos I was pretty please with on the whole.

The lens is really good, and I can only imagine Olympus upcoming pro version of the same focal range, with an aperture of f2.8 will be even better. Overall a great lens, but probably not one I see myself buying for personal use.

Get Low #1 - Windows & Clouds

First attempt and entry to the assignment...somehow I feel the composition could be better.

Let's see how it goes from here.

DedPxl Assignment - Get Low

I didn't take part in the last assignment, might as well figure sth for this one.

RSFPR #2 - Tigerair

Taken while at the airport.

I don't think this is as strong as the first submission, but it's the nicer one I find from the stuff I took at the airport.

Hopefully Hong Kong will give some inspiration.

RSFPR #1 - Esplanade

Cliche shot, but hey, had to start somewhere, couldn't find anything good in the past few days. Taken while chilling at the Padang.

DedPxl Assignment - Repetitive Shapes and Forms, Pattern, Rythm

Gotta get started.

Photo Challenge #1: Krav Maga

When Al had suggested we consider doing a shooting challenge, one that would help us understand and improve our photography skills, it was a good opportunity to try my hand at single flash photography since the parameters we were allowed to work with for the shoot was a maximum of one camera flash.

Seeing that I had only been exposed to umbrella shooting thus far, I stuck to what I knew and did two shots, one safe shot and one a bit more adventurous.

The safe shot was a single hand choke release & punch. I like two shots I took but the one I prefer is the one below where Al leans in for the strike.

The more adventurous one was a perspective down up shot where I wanted to capture a bit of the sky.

Unfortunately darkness came pretty quick and by the time I got what I wanted, the sky was gone.

I had initially tried a reverse bounce that I saw in Zack's one light video. It was great but then I tried shoot through and the main different I noticed is given that I did want to light up a bit of the background, a reverse bounce wasn't strong enough. The shoot through allowed light to spill onto the walls giving a bit of faux ambient lighting which I needed for the shot.

Too bad the sky was gone, but I was glad the angle I was looking for was pretty decent. A wider lens would have been better for what I was trying to achieve but I got no complaints with what I got so far.

Notes:
  • Bring down ISO, bring up flash power. I was shooting at iso 800 & 1,250 in that order, not a good idea, my photos could be less noisy but that's just me being picky.
  • If allowed two lights, a fill from where Calvin's right foot is in the second shot would be a position to consider putting to help add in the dark areas around calvin's left thigh and Al's leg & face.
Overall a fun experience, completed both shots below 1hr 30min. I was considering to do my third one but gave it a miss.

Thanks a lot to the guys for assisting with the shoot!

Rejected Lines - DedPxl Assignment

Well...I'm done with the DedPxl Lines Assignment, I've posted them previously but you may view them here (LINK) if you like to once more.

Technically I felt Lines #7 wasn't good enough either, I'm not sure why I put it up...desperation to add one more to the list perhaps?

These are the ones that didn't make the cut.

The next assignment is coming, hopefully I'll have something to shoot while in HK come mid April.

Lines #7

Last entry to the Dedpxl assignment. Wished I had more time to take photos but reservist made it a tad challenging.

Will find time to post all my rejected works as wells during my next book out.

Lines #3, #4, and #5

Decided that if I were going to get more inspiration, what I needed wasn't a fast aperture, but the option for various perspectives, hence decided to swap the lens and went out today with the 14-150mm tele zoom.

Managed a couple of shots during lunch, out of which these three I liked.

Lines #3 - 67mm (134mm FF Equivalent) Focal Length, f6.3, 1/800 Shutter, ISO400

Lines #4
Lines #3 - 14mm (28mm FF Equivalent) Focal Length, f6.3, 1/200 Shutter, ISO400

Lines #5
Lines #3 - 31mm (62mm FF Equivalent) Focal Length, f5, 1/2,500 Shutter, ISO400

I really want to get a good shadow shot, but cause I go out during noon, there isn't much shadows to play with, hopefully I'll get to see something soon enough.

Lines #2

My second entry to the DedPxl Assignment. I've been trying to get something good the past few days but haven't had any luck.

Honestly this isn't compelling to me either, kind of a cliche photo.

Got to get working on more before reservist kicks in a week from now.

DedPxl Assignment - Lines (And Lines #1)

Al shared this with us this morning, apparently Zack Arias had started a community assignment where photographers can get together to learn and better their photography skills by working on specific subjects one at a time to brush up their work.

(I don't really agree with David Bailey's quote about painting in the first part of the video, but I do agree on his opinion in photography)

The first assignment at hand is "Lines", and the subject may vary base on your own interpretation.

Recently I've been trying to make the habit of bringing my camera out in my hand whenever I go for my lunch breaks, the idea is to capture more rather than constantly leave it aside to rot.

I had that idea previously and hence had the camera in my bag at all times whenever I went out, but that was the problem, it was in my bag, so when a photo-op arises, I end up thinking whether there's time to reach into my bag to take it out, and after awhile I got lazy and just moved on.

By having the camera at hand at all times, it'll hopefully encourage me to keep a lookout for photo opportunities during my free time. 2

Admittedly the results have been frugal, I had no subject matter and hence everything was at random. With this assignment however, hopefully I'll be able to focus on certain subjects and touch on those first before going out and trying to be random with my photography.

Lines #1

I just submitted my first entry for this assignment, a photo I took this morning while on the way to work. I don't really have a name to give this photo, some of the entries in the Flickr group include titles and what not, I figured perhaps it's best to leave it to interpretation...plus I really can't think of a cool name for it la =P

Going to add a new label to my blog called "Photo Assignment", for now it'll follow Zack's topics, and when there's free time I'll give myself some topics to work with and see where that takes me.

You can read more about Zack Arias's assignment HERE.
