Hwee's Birthday

So last weekend, the bunch of us gathered on Sunday evening to have dinner in celebration of Hwee's birthday.

It was pre-planned, and one of the things we had planned apart from dinner was to surprise her with a home-made birthday cake from Xinn!

This was of course, our first attempt at making cake, and without any testing prior to that, Babe and I found ourselves on a Saturday morning looking through ingredient at Phoon Huat deciding what cake to make...we hadn't picked the flavor, we didn't know how to decorate it, and we weren't even sure what icing to get to coat the cake.

After a bit of driving around, we gathered the stuff we (thought) we needed, and got home to rest. Our initial plan was to test make the icing for the cake on Saturday, but since we didn't have a machine mixer, we ended up mixing the icing by hand, which was no easy feat considering the instructions required us to have a machine...haha!

After over an hour of stirring (and a few sore arms later), we gave up and popped it in the fridge, hoping a miracle would happen....it didn't.

The next morning, we got right down to baking the cake. It wasn't a big cake to begin with, we didn't think we needed a big one either anyway.

The cake took awhile but seemed to come out fine. We then headed out for a bit and got the cake box...and as a last minuted decision, we went ahead and got strawberries to add some tanginess to the cake.

Everything was going fine, by about 2, we had cut the cake, layered it, and flipped it out of the pan...now came the icing!

Needless to say, machine whip is machine whip, and our hand whipping wasn't up to standard, the icing couldn't hold up well, but it was almost there...sorta. We popped it back into the fridge before it fell apart, hoping the cold would keep it together.

We settled for a smiley face on the cake, haha, ok la, it looked very ghetto, home made is definitely the right word to use.

That evening we had dinner at En Dining Japanese Bar @ Millenia Walk...I have to say the spread is pretty awesome!!! It wasn't cheap mind you, but the stuff that kept coming was pretty solid.

I would say the selection of foods were more modern Japanese, the sashimi was good, it wasn't as good as Ikoi to me I think, but good enough to enjoy, plus the mix of modern snacks really made up for it. The shabu shabu was awesome too, since the meat was sliced so thinly it was easy to eat!

When the meal was over, the cake was whipped out. Needless to say, Hwee was glad Xinn pulled it off for a first time, and yes it was most definitely edible la, though a tad too sweet for my liking!

Overall it was a great Sunday, tiring but great, HPPD Hwee, and thanks for recommending the restaurant!
