When it comes to Initial D, two cars that stand out a lot would be the Toyota 86, and the Subaru Impreza, one driven by the main character, the other, a car purchased by his dad, who himself is a legendary racer.
Though it wasn't a huge scene, the closest his son ever got to racing his father was when his dad secretly brought the car out for a test drive.
You can see why Toyota and Subaru are two names that come to mind when speaking with an Initial D enthusiast.
So when Toyota and Subara decided to come together and make a new car, and even more so, call it the Toyota GT86, after the famed name that is the AE86, you can see why it's a huge deal!
It looks very different of course from the original AE86, but with a name like that, it has a lot to live up to...and with Subaru and Toyota's collaboration boxer engine fitted into this car, you can be assured it's a beast!
Being a combined effort, the car won't just be sold under the Toyota branding, it'll market in some places as the Subaru BRZ, as well as the Scion in other parts of the world, the same way Honda is sold as Acura and Nissan as Infiniti.
The car's also made its way into Singapore and you'll be sure to see enthusiasts get a hold of this car as soon as its out in the market.
I'm of course, unable to afford one, but it's still exciting news to see how well this new model is in keeping up with the name of two legendary brands when it comes to street racing.
The car's now used by D1 Racer Nob Taniguchi who's one of the top drifters in Japan (Red car above), who used to race in a Nissan S15, later a Toyota Altezza, and now this. =)
