Read online from somebody that the iPhone's screen is 3.5 because it's the easiest to articulate your thumb around the device with one hand, and that doing so with the SGSII was "almost impossible".
Tried it out just now just to see for myself and took a picture...note I wasn't stretching my thumb in this photo.
Personally I think the other theory which seems more logical was the one where Jobs didn't want to up the size of the screen cause then it would "fragment" the design from the original iphone line up...the phones wouldn't resemble each other, apps wouldn't look the same...etc.
