Read elsewhere, apparently Sony will lose their rights to Spiderman if they didn't make another movie. Since their last Spidey attempt was quite fail, they decided to do a reboot instead...sticking to their part of the deal and preventing the rights from going back to Marvel.
Sad though, it looks good and bad at the same time, would've been great if Marvel got back the rights, would love to see their version of the web slinger...maybe the story will be told more like this:
