We walked pass this place before and were pretty intrigued by it. It was Italian, yet had a very Japanese feel to it...which only came to one conclusion - it's a Italian style Japanese restaurant (well duh...lol)
One of the things that caught out eyes was actually the pricing, which, to be honest, isn't so bad at all!!! Of course, it not being your typical authentic Italian cuisine, I figured it would only be fair to say it probably should not be compared to the more atas stuff out there.
One of the most basic but delicious items worth having is their Focaccia Bread, which is slightly buttered and toasted...it's fragrant, and good just eating it on its own.
The mussels were pretty decent, a little too salty for our taste, and I totally forgot Xinn wasn't a big fan of onions when I ordered it (SORRY DEAR!), so she ended up scrapping most of them off and onto my portions. lol
I thought the escargots, at $5.58++, were a really good bargain, and came in the same serving dish like they did with Au Petite Salut. but UNLIKE au petite salut, theirs were a little bit over salted as well...and the simmered onions and herbs that were used, upon close inspection, looked pretty much like the same ingredients that you get on top of the mussels appetizer. I gues you can't complaing much from a restaurant that serves up pretty reasonable prices. Still, cause one's grilled and the other's melted down to a sauce, the textures were different, and to me, really pleasing...just..well..a little salty.
The two maincourses we ordered were rather nice actually.
The beef patty with pork reminded Xinn of Ikea meat balls, while the tuna pasta was good, and did not have that kinda canned-tuna smell you'd get especially if the chef did not drain out the brine. There were cloves of garlic in the tuna pasta which Xinn didn't like, which meant more for me...*chomp!*One thing though...after eating through half way, we did find that some of the items were gettng a bit too rich for our taste. Word of advice, share with your partner or friends when eating at this place so you get a bit of everything without getting sick of your own dish. =)
Lastly, if you're in a bit of a thirst frenzy, the restaurant offers free flow drinks at $2.58++ if you order a main course with it. The bar consists of your usual pepsi, mountain dew, rootbeer mix, as well as ice milo, mango, lemon barley and lime juice. They even had hot drinks, milo, coffee, tea, the works. For the first time I actually mixed lime with Rootbeer, Xinn thought it tasted funky, I thought it was something I'll be trying out more often in future...hah!Our budget totaled to $39 plus...ok round that up to $40, that's $20 per person which included:
1x Focaccia Bread
1x Mussels
1x Escargot
1x Beef Hamburger with Pork
1x Tuna Pasta
2x Freeflow Drinks
Not bad for a budget Italian restaurant eh? =)
Anyway dinner was good, almost towards great if it weren't for the overly salted appetizers which were still enjoyable once you get pass that fact., More importantly the company was great =)
Maybe we'll go back there again to try out other things in future...after all the Gratin items looked pretty massive.
=)
