Zhng My Camera

I went about online searching randomly for stuff relating to my new powershot when I stumbled upon a site called CHDK, which basically stands for "Canon Hackers Development Kit"

Now simply, what this does is that is unlocks the potential of your Canon Powershot's processor which is limited in canon's low range cameras.
Basically, all canon cameras come with a processing chip that produces images for all their cameras. The same Digic 4 processor you see in this camera...
...is also the same Digic 4 processor you see in THIS camera
Now of course canon isn't gonna be so dumb as to give u access to all the goodie functions of an Eos 5D in your ixus right? Of course not la...duh.
So this is where this little piece of software comes in.

What CHDK does it is overrides the internal functions of your canon powershot camera to be able to perform the same functions you'd get in your typical DSLR...YES...DSLR!!!!

Some of these includes:
1. Shooting in RAW mode
2. Increasing/Decreasing your ISO
3. Increasing/Decreasing your shutter speed
4. Bracketing (Great for shooting HDR images!)
5. Motion Detection (Instant click upon specific field of movement, great for lightning shots!)

This and much more really, including all that little pro-stuff like histograms, Depth of Field calculator etc.

To be HONEST, the software upload was quite a pain for me to execute...it's still so...er.....so...geeky? You really have to run through the steps by yourself carefully cause their website is a MESS!!!Once I got it in though, you can see the menu nolonger resembles a regular canon menu (CHDK Menu's the one below).

My camera wasn't of much benefit with this enhancement other than being able ot shoot in RAW mode, which I don't...I mean...really, what for? I'm no pro or anything anyway. Not to mention the SX10is comes packed with so many features it already has most of a DSLR's functions so a lot of the stuff I practically need not use from the hacked firmware. The only two benefits I ahve is that I can now set my apeture from f8 to f11 instead, plus my limited 15second shutter speed can now be set to infinite. =D ISO can go all the way to 8000, although...seriously....why would u want such a lousy noisy picture?

If you got a powershot camera and which to see what you can achieve with it after CHDK, you can check it out at this link. ( ) brackets are the original setting while the [] are the ones after CHDK. Mind you though, this software isn't easy to go about installing and isn't exactly the most user friendly interface around.

Of course another thing u can't change is hardware, like said, a DSLR produces great images not just because of its processor, but its hardware as well, something powershots lack. Hence, you may be able to up your photo capabilities in terms of functions, don't expect pro-like pictures with it.

Nuff said, blogs are boring without pictures.

Shall go sleep

zzzzzzzzzzzz
